LAKE COUNTY, OHIO SIGHTING - October 2016 - BFRO 56073

While cutting the grass on the back of his lot, a man had a sighting of something disappearing from view.

It was in October, around 4 pm, while the witness was cutting the grass, clearing the path that he used to go into the woods for target shooting. That was when he caught sight of something out of the corner of his eye. He stopped the mower and took a better look. There was a shape moving in the brush along the ravine, walking away from him. He saw only the back and not the face.

The witness thought at first that it might be a bear, but it was walking upright and continued to do until out of sight. That was perhaps longer than most bears would or could walk on its hind legs. He wondered if the sound of the mower had frightened whatever it was.

While talking to the BFRO investigator, he further described what he saw as being 7 to 8 foot tall and having longer hair than what a bear has. The witness said he watched it for a few minutes; it remained on only two feet the entire time.

The next day when the witness went back out to look, he could not find any tracks, but he did find "disturbed brush" and a game trail.

The witness also discussed how his neighbor's Guinea and turkeys had been taken, leaving only feathers scattered across the two properties. The neighbor put up trail cams trying to discover who or what was taking his birds, but has only gotten fox and coyote so far. [It is quite reasonable to consider that scattered feathers do lend to fox and coyote taking the birds.]

The neighbor added that he had noticed a drastic decrease in the deer population on both his acreage and in the general area during the past few years.

The witness spoke of getting the feeling of being watched. And that at the end of September he had put pumpkins at the back of the property for the deer. When he checked back there, he found the pumpkins had disappeared. Not eaten and picked at. Just totally gone.

The area where this sighting took place has a woods of maple and oak and is hilly and rugged. The ravine the figure disappeared into has a creek running through it. It is private property and has little to no human traffic.

SONNY VATOR -- HOAXER ?? -- The Canadian trapper video

This is an update on my original post on Sonny Vator. Updated material is at the end. Thank you.

There is a video that has been making it's way around the internet these past couple months. While I usually keep an open mind, this one is hard to swallow and I will not keep silent.

When I first saw the "Canadian Trapper" video, as it is popularly being called, I saw several red flags.  The zooming in and out on the alleged sasquatch and the panicked running of the trapper when the sasquatch appears to be just standing there behind a tree at quite some distance from the guy.  The face looks frozen and quite similar to the Chewbecca masks  -- of which there are several different versions on the market. Then there is the alleged child being clutched by this "mama" sasquatch. Frozen in fear. Fear of what?  Neither face moves, not even a blink. The entire thing screams FAKE.

So I decided to investigate this Sonny Vator. First stop was of course, Youtube. Back to that in a moment. Second stop was Google+. And there he was.

Listed are several videos, all now unavailable through his Google+ account.

"Cowboy Redneck's cousin gets attacked by Wild Dog"
"Bad day for Redneck Cowboy"
"Wild Child lives to ride again" - January 28, 2017
"Bigfoot attack part 3"  - June 18, 2017
"Bigfoot attack part 2"  - May 7, 2017

Now, on April 10, 2013 Vator posted a 10 minute "Blair Witch" styled video of a man named "Frank"  [Frank Wildchild, of the Wildchild video series fame?] who gets "attacked" by a bigfoot. This is most likely the "Bigfoot attack part 1" video of the series.  Then just two months ago, 5 years later, he produced part 2 of the "attack" where Frank wakes up inside a bigfoot "shelter". Now, while supposedly being terrified for his life, he sits around and stands around filming this "shelter" for about 3 and 1/2 minutes. Three and one half minutes.

Then he finally wanders away from the shelter.  Somehow, he stumbles upon "Dan's" bag which holds a flare gun. ( The opening credits tells us that Dan is dead, having been allegedly murdered by the alleged sasquatch). For no apparent reason, Frank manages to load the gun and fires off the flare. And then doesn't stay in the area. Which one would assume he would do if he was trying to signal for help.

Frank continues to wander and eventually arrives at what is presented to be a sasquatch grave. A structure of wood covered with more of the skeletons and skulls (like the structure Frank woke up in). There is some sort of hairy creature lying there covered by what looks to be pelts of animals, like what one would buy in a store, or what Hollywood might use. He then spends over 3 minutes filming this, focusing on everything BUT THE BODY of the alleged sasquatch.

NEVER DOES HE DO THE NATURAL REACTION WHICH IS TO FILM THE BODY AND FACE OF THE BODY LYING THERE.

The film ends with more of the grunting sounds and wood knocks or branches breaking that the film began with and the screen goes black. With part 3 promised to come soon.

The descrepancy in dates revealed in the postings is a red flag.
The style of filming - ala Blair Witch -- is a red flag.
The history of types of videos made is a red flag.

Come on, people. This guy Sonny Vator is having a good time with all of you. He is making up stories and filming them. And not even doing a good job of it. He is making up stories and filming them. These are NOT REAL events. THEY ARE FICTION.

UPDATE : SINCE MY ORIGINAL POST DATE : THIS VIDEO IS NO LONGER AVAILABLE.

Now, there is absolutely no problem with someone making up stories and even filming them. However, I feel there is an ethical and moral obligation to state that fact. There are other places that present videos that are not fact. They tell you. Campfire stories. Stories based on reported experiences.

Professor Moody said it best in the Harry Potter books :

"CONSTANT VIGILANCE !"

Investigate claims. Try to know the person. Discard blind faith. Keep an open mind.

As for Sonny Vator and his "Attack Bigfoot", my mind is made up. His videos are fiction. And if he presents them as fact, then he is a hoaxer.

UPDATE : Bigfoot attack part 1

Blair Witch. Just to give a couple highlights. Ok. So Frank stops to tell us that he is being stalked by "it". He finally stops to confront his stalker. He is afraid. He gets his rifle ready. BUT he doesn't forget to set up his camera to film it. And when the alleged bigfoot finally attacks him, it so obligingly takes the camera with Frank. How considerate. Beautiful ala Blair Witch ending to this segment.

bigfoot attack part 2
https://youtu.be/Cr2srwVihss

Well, I can see why the original video was taken down. From a daylight event, it has now turned into a nighttime horror film.  He has added snapped off trees and an x on the ground. He's kept the funeral platform but now calls it a young male. We are shown a bit of the body but still no facial features. The fake bones are still there. This time the "brave" trapper Frank Wildchild creeps up and with his knife cuts off some of the bigfoot's hair.

Here's a thought. If bigfoot really lay their dead out on elevated platforms in the forest, why haven't any of the rest of us come across one? And if they think enough of their dead to place them in honor, why leave them exposed to the elements and to be eaten by animals?

If they build shelters, why are they not taller so that they do not have to crawl to get inside? Why would bigfoot leave bones and rotting carcasses all over inside and outside and on top of their shelters? Why is there no footage of bigfoot tracks? Why is the snow undisturbed in front of the shelters except for Wildchild's tracks?

And, last but not least, where the heck did he get that battery?  Man, it lasted so long and in the cold. We all want to get that camera and battery. Just saying.

Anyhow, all his previous videos appear to be gone except for 6. These two, two other's by the "Trapper" and the 6th telling you of a gun that's a good bigfoot gun. Guess the Trapper didn't have that one with him?

SIGHTING REPORTED FROM HOWLAND OHIO

This alleged sighting is said to have happened in March, year unknown, in Howland in Trumbull County.

The man making the report was referred to as a 45-year old plumber who claimed to take a photograph of a group of "Bigfoots".  He was out hiking in the woods with his dog when the dog appeared to pick up a scent. The dog led the man to where he then saw the alleged bigfoot. He claims that he saw a total of four of them next to a fallen tree by a creek.

"There was one sitting, looking at me. There was a big one leaning out of what I believe is a shelter they made out of the root of the tree. I also saw what looked like two more crouching on the back side of the root. They were dark brown, almost black color. I'm 6'4" and I knew they were a lot bigger than me."

Between calming his frightened dog and trying not to make eye contact with the animals, he managed to take his photographs with his iPhone5 -- "no more than 10 seconds apart". The photo appears to maybe show a silhouette that could be sitting on a tree root. There does not seem to be any other shapes in the photo.

“Look to the far right of the first picture to the right side of the black tree. Note his legs are weird but there is a tree laying down just in front of him that has snow on it," claimed the witness.

After about a minute, the witness said he could no longer contain his fear and he then fled the area. “I didn’t even follow the tracks I made getting to the area. I totally made a b-line to get out,” he says.

He claimed to have returned 12 days later to re-examine the area. He took more photographs of the area. No "Bigfoots" were found to be there.

“After the snow melt nothing in the pics, but note where the one was sitting, there is nothing there.”

“I have probably shown close to 30 people my pictures and I’d say over 20 believe me, others have said that it’s raccoons, a bear den, and someone’s pet monkey got loose. A few don’t see anything,” he added.

The witness said that day was the most frightening day of his entire life. He knows that he saw "Bigfoots".

“They didn’t harm me or chase me but you never know. I’m not gonna argue, I just know people need to know these things are out there. It’s been almost three months and there hasn’t been one day go by that I don’t zoom in or look at these pictures,” he said.

“They are here in this area and they are real. I know 100%,” said the man.

What is in the photos? I don't know. Is the man for real?  I don't know. Where  are the rest of the photographs he took both that day and 12 days later? I don't know. And Cryptozoology News? Are they legit? I don't know. The report of their reliability of news : unknown; Overall reputation : unknown; Trustworthiness : unknown. There have been no reviews, no complaints, no nothing on the website. So, take from the report and the photos what you will.

OHIO ENCOUNTER - January 2018 - BFRO 59078

Footprints, screams, howls, and disturbed dogs are all part of this man's experiences with sasquatch in Belmont County, near St.Clairsville, Ohio.

On January 20, 2018, a man taking his dog out for a walk noticed some tracks in the snow headed towards his neighbor's house. These tracks were in addition to the usual deer tracks and he examined them more closely.

The tracks were deep; 5 or 6 inches of snow was on the ground. There were two different sets, one larger set, and the other slightly smaller. They resembled footprints, more than boot or shoe prints. He felt fairly certain that these were tracks from sasquatch. He could see  what looked like three toes. Pictures were taken with his cellphone.

He took his son, visiting from out of state, out to look at the tracks. This time, due to melting of the snow, they were able to make out five toes. His son agreed with the witness, the tracks were not made by humans, deer or bear. As you can see from the above photograph, the prints lined up one in front of the other and it was obvious there were two separate creatures walking through the field, close to each other. The son wore a size 17 shoe. The prints appeared larger than the shoe.

The two  traced the prints back to the woods. There were at least 300 yards of prints. The son went into the woods the next day where the prints had emerged. He found a couple of tracks in a muddy spot that appeared similar to the ones in the snow. The witness revealed that the previous night, the dog had woke him at 4:30 am with growling at the window. It never barked, just growled for 45 minutes. That night, at 8 pm, they tried knocks, but got no response.

On February 13 the witness again found tracks within 20 yards of January's tracks.  Again there were two sets of prints in the 7 inches of snow. These also had toes visible in them. These tracks went within 20 yards of his fence and then circled back. The witness admitted that he and his wife put apples and other food items out for the deer.

The witness also gave some background history to these experiences.

Mid-September of 2017, the witness took his indoor dog outside around 1 am. While they were out there, they were startled by a loud, blood curdling scream, like a woman. One of his dogs, upon hearing the scream, ran to the door, wanting to get inside.

A day later, his wife told him a similar story. She had taken the dog out around 1:30 am and heard a most "god-awful" scream. It scared her so badly that once back inside and in bed, she could not sleep. The witness told her that he had the same thing happen to him the night before.

In mid-October they were sitting in their backyard with some friends. The witness said there was a faint howl heard over the music playing. He then asked if they believed in bigfoot. His friend said he thought they might exist. The witness then proceeded to give three knocks, Within 30 seconds they were able to hear two and a half howls in response. There were two complete howls and a third that seemed to cut off half way through. Over the next 45 minutes there was an additional three howls.  Said his friend :

"That was not human."

PENNSYLVANIA ENCOUNTER REPORTED JUNE 2018

NOT the pond from the encounter *
On June 18, an anonymous report was made to Bigfoot Case Files. It was also picked up by Bigfoot Evidence and Sasquatch Central.

A man (we'll call Tom*) has reported two different encounters. The first occured around 30 some years ago when he was 19 or 20  years old. It was late in June when he and a buddy (let's call him Rory*) decided to go fishing at a pond that was part way up a mountain in northern Pennsylvania. They arrived at the pond at around 7 pm and set up a quick camp. The two young men heated some stew for supper and then sat around the camp lantern talking about the big bass they were going to catch.

When midnight came near, they started hearing sounds of what seemed to be large rocks hitting the deep water of the pond.  They listened for a bit and then determined that the splashes were coming from the deep center of the pond, about 30 yards from the shore. After a few more, the sounds stopped and the two returned to the table and their lantern light. They had  a short discussion about what could have made those noises then returned  their talk to fishing.

A little while later the two began to hear sounds of something moving in the woods from the direction of the pond, about 100 yards away. And it was then they realized that the forest had gone silent. The sounds continued to get closer and their spotlight was employed. They could see nothing moving in the dark. For a while, they told themselves it was probably a bear or deer walking around in the trees.

Then the footstep sounds seemed to spread out and they knew there was now more than one creature walking around out there. "There is more than one, whatever they are," Tom said to Rory as they continued to listen. They again deployed the spotlight, trying to see what was out there. The footsteps appeared to be slowly moving in and making a circle around them. When the sounds reached 25-30 yards away, pine cones and small sticks started landing within ten feet of the two.

"I don't know who you are or what you are, but that's close enough!" But the yell seemed to have little effect on whatever was out there as Tom could now hear footsteps behind him.

Tom turned to his friend. "This isn't right. I can hear them within 15 yards of us and we still can't see them! I'll stand guard, you load the truck, quickly!" By this time, there seemed to be at least 6 to 8 beings moving in around them, plus more unknowns behind. Rory got the truck was loaded in record time, including the boat, and they took off.

The two drove to Tom's grandparents house and camped in the driveway for the rest of the night. (The couple were out of state and the house empty) In the morning, they finally went fishing, at a different spot than the original pond.

For years Tom did not know how to explain what may have happened that night; what was in the dark and throwing pine cones and sticks and large rocks in the water. He thinks he has the answer now.

Just last month (May), he and a different friend (we'll call Buddy*) decided to go to that pond. They decided to stay there until midnight just to see if something similar might happen to them. Buddy asked him why he thought that the creatures might still be there.

Tom explained to his him, ". . . although they seemed determined to run us off they weren't violent, nor did they vocalize at all." He did add that if there had been vocal sounds, he would have been paralyzed with fear. His reasons for returning to look included the fact that the area was mostly the same. It was still undeveloped; still had a good, clean water source; still plenty of territory to roam; plenty of food sources; little human activity; and good look out places to watch for people approaching the pond and surrounding area.

They arrived just before dark and started to set up at the same spot from 30 odd years ago. Another car pulled in to set up to fish, so the two decided to move about 100 yards away to a small pavilion. For around 30 minutes they sat talking quietly, then Buddy decided to take a walk around the area to check it out. He remained within sight while exploring.  Tom sat near the pavilion staring at the pond. Then for no apparent reason, he suddenly looked behind him just in time to see "a large dark brown creature covered in hair drop down out of sight behind a large fallen forked tree limb lying on the ground. He appeared to be on his knees resting both hands on the top fork of the fallen limb."

Tom could the top of the head to half way down the torso.  He believed that they had actually surprised each other when he had turned around. Buddy by now had almost  completed his way around the area and soon returned. By the time he returned to Tom's side, the creature was gone. Tom asked Buddy if he had seen anything interesting. Buddy said no. Tom then proceeded to tell him what just happened and how he had not called out to Buddy as he didn't wish to catch the attention of the other fishermen down at the pond.

With this promising beginning, the two built a small fire to keep warm and settled down. It continued to get colder and darker until around 10:30 fog set in. It got so thick they couldn't see anything near or far, so the two packed up and left.

Said Tom : "So apparently they are still there, and we're excited to go back up again soon."

Guess we'll just have to wait to hear the further adventures of our anonymous witness.

IVAN T. SANDERSON - Forgotten Father of Cryptozoology

While Ivan Sanderson was not the first man to chase after crytids, he was the man who named the field that we all dabble in.

He and fellow zoologist Bernard Heuvelmans defined the actions of scattered peoples in the 1950s, gathering the idea into a name : Cryptozoology - the study of hidden animals. This concept encompasses both the "folklore creatures" such as sasquatch and the Loch Ness Monster and the animals considered extinct and perhaps also folklore.  The term 'cryptid' is said to have been coined by J. E. Wall in 1983, meaning a living thing having the quality of being hidden or unknown.

Why a post on a man that many have never heard about?  Because he was the first influence on me while growing up.  His books were amazingly available in the local library and reading of the unknown in them sparked an interest. They were devoured alongside the books by Charles Fort and so my interest in strange tales was born : UFOs, aliens, objects falling out of the sky, spontaneous human combustion, and too many others to list. And, of course, sasquatch.

He was born in January, 1911 in Scotland and died a naturalized citizen of the U.S. in 1973.  He was an explorer, an author, tv and radio star, journalist, researcher, zoo keeper, spy.

Sanderson earned a BA in Zoology with honors from Cambridge University (much more complicated and harder earned than a BA in the US) and an MA in both Botany and Ethnology. He led expeditions to the African and Asian continents, and throughout the Caribbean and Central American regions. Some of those took place while he was still in his teens and early to mid-twenties.

With the coming of World War II, he was a part of British Naval Intelligence, in charge of counter-espionage against the Germans in the Caribbean. When his cover was blown, he went to work for British Security Coordination. He then finished out the war as a press agent in New York city. After the war, he made his home in New York, becoming a citizen.

And he began the "Nature" stage of his life, writing books on animals and his various expeditions. Sanderson also made many tv and radio appearances discussing and displaying his collection of collected animals.  In 1952, he even bought property and built his own zoo to house his prized and much loved creatures. Unfortunately a fire destroyed most of his rare animals and a flood resulting from two hurricanes in 1955 destroyed his zoo.

Sanderson was an early follower of Charles Fort, admiring him and his work. He took an interest in the same unexplained things around the world just as Charles Fort did before him. Sanderson paid special attention to lake monsters, sea-serpents, mokele-mbembo, giant penguins and the yeti and sasquatch. He founded the Ivan T. Sanderson Foundation in August of 1965 in New Jersey. Two years later he changed the name to Society for the Investigation of the Unexplained (SITU) in 1967, claiming it made the organization more proactive and interesting than a "foundation". The non-profit organization investigated claims of strange phenomena ignored by mainstream science.

SITU made Sanderson's collection of papers and his writings and research available to both paying members and honorary members. It is said that Charles Berlitz researched his book on the Bermuda Triangle using SITU and Sanderson's files. The world famous little gold modal airplanes that Erich Von Daniken featured in his book also came from the collection. Howard Menger, UFO author, hung out and probably made use of the files also.

Sanderson's wife became ill with cancer and died, leaving SITU in chaos as she was the bookkeeper and records keeper. Sanderson spent much of his time with her during her last months and then he too became ill. Also diagnosed with cancer, he died at home. Several of the board members attempted to keep SITU functioning, but soon found none of them could fill Sanderson's shoes and keep the enthusiasm alive. Also, without someone keeping good records, members using the library and files would take them from the premises saying they would return them as soon as they were done. Many of the files never made it back. It is said that in the last days of SITU, cars would actually back up to the porch and boxes of files were loaded into them. A sad ending for the endless amount of information that Sanderson had spent his life collecting and organizing for future cryptozoologists to study.

And now his connection to sasquatch. He did field work. He researched and collected stories of encounters. He was both a correspondent and a friend to people like Loren Coleman, John Green, and Rene Dahinden.  He was a skeptical believer. He looked for truth in the stories told, willing to share the encounters people told him with others in hopes that somewhere more information could be found and stories verified or supported.

Coleman admitted that Sanderson could be skeptical. He related in his book "Mysterious America" that Sanderson discovered the 1909 'Jersey Devil' was an elaborate real estate hoax. He was also involved in the Bluff Creek investigations and examined the Minnesota Iceman. [more on those later].
In addtion to his books on nature, his fiction{pen name Terence Roberts}, UFOs and USOs {Unidentified Submerged Objects},  Sanderson also wrote books on the paranormal : Things; More Things; Abominable Snowmen: Legend come to life; Investigating the Unexplained; Uninvited visitors, a biologist looks at UFOs; and Invisible Residents the reality of Underwater UFOs with David Hatcher Childers.  Magazine articles and essays were contributed throughout his career. Sanderson also provided the artwork for his writings.

First the Minnesota Iceman. In December, 1968, Sanderson heard about the carnival sideshow display of a human-like creature. The frozen creature encased in a block of ice had been touring for the past two years.  The refrigerated truck used to transport the insulated coffin and it's contents had been driven to a farm in Minnesota for the winter.

Sanderson gathered Bernard Heuvelmans, a Belgian zoologist, and they went to examine the creature. They were able to spend two days studying it while it remained frozen in its ice. They never saw the body out of the ice, it remained frozen their entire visit.

The two men noted that the feet of the creature seemed adapted for neither climbing nor for walking bipedal. The hands seemed neither ape-like nor human, but something in between. The hair had alternating bands of dark and light hair, a pattern similar to a squirrels. In short, it was like no creature either of them had ever seen before. Heuvelmans was convinced he was viewing a genuine deep-frozen Neanderthal.  Sanderson simply stated he found the creature authentic.

Sanderson became frustrated with the conditions under which they were made to examine the body. There was no space in the truck for them to adequately photograph it. He did make detailed sketches. Sanderson also informed other scientists at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington, D. C. and they became interested in the possibility that a new species may have been found. This news seems to have panicked someone, for the Minnesota Iceman disappeared.

Frank D. Hansen, the man who was displaying the creature claimed that the owner had contacted him and said he wanted the body back. The owner was described by Hansen as being an eccentric West Coast millionaire connected with the movie industry. It is said that was when Hansen made the switch. He had contracted with a company to make a replica of the creature and it was this fake that he began showing around the country, still keeping it encased in ice and telling people the body was real. This seems a reasonable explanation to me, considering Sanderson's skepticism and his knowledge of animals.

And now to Bluff Creek.

In 1957, Sanderson began investigating the allegations concerning sasquatch activity in the area. He became the first, and for many years the only, serious scientist to recognize there might be an actual living being, a sasquatch.

In 1959, Tom Slick entered the scene and organized the Pacific Northwest Expedition to investigate the Bluff Creek area. Key members included Bob Titmus, Rene Dahinden, John Green, and Sanderson. It is said that Slick wanted a body, but the others expressed doubts about that being the correct approach. After forming the group, Slick gave little money to the serious researchers, instead handing out sums to local people and hunters to have them look for tracks and other evidence for him. He wasted the money on the locals being an easy mark for con artists.

Tiring of the "amateurs" and having to ride in the back of the car with the tracking dogs, Dahinden soon called it quits and left. The experience with the dogs just emphasized how much Dahinden disliked the way Slick had organized the work.

Timus was the "deputy leader" but rarely was in the field as he had to attend to running his business. None of the others were able to stay full time but came as they could. All pictures and all other evidence was required to be sent to Slick in San Antonio. It makes one wonder just what happened to all of it.

In those early days of investigation and research without the cameras and videos and recorders and other technology of today, Sanderson joined with others who tried to find ways to do the field work needed to find answers. They focused on tangibles, like footprints, hair samples.  He believed that the sasquatch, the yeti were primitive, human-like creatures. Sanderson broke them down into three types.

1) Neanderthaler - a cave man type found in Mongolia, China  and Tibet.
2) Sasquatch or bigfoot - found in North America, Central America and possibly South America.
3) Meh-Teh - a beast like creature with fangs, found in the Himalaya Mountains in Asia, more from the ape side of evolution than from the human.

Not bad deductions from a man who had limited information available to him to form theories.

Oh, and one last item for those who think to dismiss Sanderson's contributions. It is said that Ivan Sanderson's articles in magazines and other writings helped inspire Roger Patterson to go look for sasquatch for himself. Without Sanderson, there may have been no Patterson Film. And no Patty.

MORE ROADSIDE SASQUATCH STORIES

Rob Roy bigfoot

Law enforcement officers see many strange things throughout their careers. One thing many hesitate to report to their superiors is anything paranormal, including seeing a sasquatch. So when these two deputy sheriff's stepped forward and told their stories to John Green, he paid attention.

Although this sighting happened as a teenager, this deputy sheriff never changed his story even years later when Green interviewed him.

The encounter took place in mid-September, 1966. He was on Fisk Road a few miles east of Yakima, Washington. It was late at night, around 11 pm and he was on his way back home after taking a friend home.

"I was on my way home and I came round the corner and it was raining that night, and lightning flashing and everything, and this thing was standing in the middle of the road. I slammed on the brakes and my car skidded right up to it and stopped about three feet from it. It just stood there and looked at me right through the windshield of the car."

When he had slammed on the brakes, the engine stopped. The "thing" walked around behind his car and then turned around and walked up to the side of the car and looked in the window at him. He finally got the car started and drove off.

He described it as being a little over 7 ft tall and had long hair all over. It looked like "a  big man", heavy, "awfully broad" and "kind of a light greyish white color". The witness also described the face. "He had a real flat nose and his lips were real thin. He had hair on his face, too, there wasn't any skin other than his lips and just around his eyes that I could see. I couldn't see any ears. He had long hair on him, all over his chest and everything."

When asked about it's eyes, he responded, "Just eyes . . .  I was so busy trying to get my car going I wasn't concentrating on staring him in the eye." He did add that the mouth was a little open and that he could see it's teeth. Although the eye teeth protruded a little more than the others, they were not fangs. He described the face as having a low forehead and a big, square jaw. The nose was flat and wide, like a human nose only "squashed".

Finally the car started and he drove off leaving it standing in the middle of the road.

Verlin Herrington, a summer deputy with the sheriff's department, never intended for his encounter to become public. Unfortunately, he was overheard discussing it with another deputy and the story spread. Herrington made a report on it and after thinking it over, the Sheriff became concerned that a "horde of monster hunters" might invade "his" county. So he issued a statement saying that Herrington had changed his mind and had decided that he had seen a bear. And then the deputy was ordered not to talk to reporters.

The encounter took place  July 26, 1969 near Hoquiam in Gray's Harbor County, Washington at 2:35 a.m. Herrington was on his way back home. Driving down Deekay Road, he rounded a corner and saw something in the road. His first impression was that a large bear was standing in the middle of the road. There was no way to drive around it, so he stopped his car.  He allowed the vehicle to coast along a little further, trying not to startle what ever it was. As he approached closer he realized :

"This animal . . .  was not a bear, because you could see by the way it was standing that it had no snout. It had a face on it. Its eyes reflected, and when I came to a complete stop I could see in the headlights of my car that it had feet on it instead of paws, and it had breasts. When I centered my spotlight on the patrolcar on it, it walked to the edge of the road. It didn't fall down on all fours like a bear would. It walked to the edge of the roadway and stopped, turned, still looking at me. I re-adjusted the spotlight on my car so I could look at it better. Its feet had hair down to the soles but you could see the outline of the foot. It did have toes. Its hand was in a position where it was spread out, and it did have fingers."

As he got out of the car, it disappeared down a steep slope into the brush, always on two feet, never dropping down to all fours. Herrington got back in his car and drove off.

Under questioning, Herrington added the following details. He was around 75 to 80 ft away from the figure while he watched it walk off the road.  He didn't believe there was any hair on the face, just a "dark leathery look". The hair seemed to be longer on the head than the body. The breasts were located in the same place as a human's and were covered in hair, except for the nipples. The hair seemed to be brownish black, dark colored. He could see no neck. The legs were described as being long and muscular.

Two reports from Washington State, by men trained to observe and remember details. Both close encounters.

I have paraphrased and updated John Green's deductions. But there are still three basic statements.  We have these three choices on what to believe here.

1) Both men are liars.
2) That there were people who thought it a good thing to put on costumes and stand in the middle of the highway waiting for a car to come along and not hit them.
3) Accept that there is something around that has not yet been formally identified as real.

I know what I think.

PUYALLUP SCREAMS - WASHINGTON STATE

There is a history of screams in this area just east of Tacoma. The following are just a few of the stories.

The screams seem to have first come to public attention in July of 1972 when Marlin Ayris, a resident of Forest Green (at the time a brand new subdivision), wrote to the Tacoma News Tribune. He spoke about hearing loud screams for a couple of nights coming from the woods behind his house. His neighbors claimed they did not hear the sounds and some of them thought he was making it up. When it began to happen again the next year, Ayris made several recordings, but didn't make any particular effort to properly care for them. He even reused some of the tapes for other things. One that did survive is a recording made during the day by hanging a microphone for the recorder out a window of his house. The original of the recording was not kept, but copies made from it exist.

On many of Ayris's recordings that people listened to you could hear the creature screaming, accompanied by the neighborhood dogs. The sound of the frantically barking dogs muddied the sound of the screams. Although the screams were louder, the dogs were closer to the microphone.

On the "Daylight Tape", the dogs are silent, but at that time in the morning, the birds were out with their morning chirping and chatter. The call recorded was not an "eeeeeeee" scream, but more of a high-pitched, long sounding "whoo ooo ooo ooo" or what some say is a "whoop whoop whoop". This was made with a high pitch but at an immense volume. (This recording is exclusive to Oregonbigfoot.com)

Although there is no proof the creature taped was a sasquatch, it is assumed to be due to the number of sightings reported from the same area. Also a set of 14 inch footprints crossing a dirt road in January of 1975 just a few hundred feet from the Forest Green area seems to also support that theory.

Two of the sightings of the creature were by  Mark Pittenger, a State trooper, on patrol in the area at night. In August, 1972, the patrolman watched something walk across the road in front of his patrol car while he was pulled over on the shoulder of the road. It came very close to the vehicle despite his lights being on. The other time he saw one, it ran across the road while he was driving.

Charles Challendar, at the time, lived at the end of a road about a mile from Forest Green. He also taped screaming from the woods  several times. On one occasion, when he heard the screams coming from an area close to his house, he ran down a trail in the woods trying to get even closer. Part way down the path, he almost ran into a creature he estimated at 9 or 10 ft tall as it stepped across the trail.

Some attribute the screams to coyotes. But some researchers said the screams are not normal coyote noises and that it is hard to imagine a coyote having that much volume to it's calls. Others say that sometimes the screams seem to deliberately imitate the coyotes.

Mark Pittenger had a tape that appeared to confirm that theory. On the recording was what seemed to be a genuine coyote and a response to them that was very like them, yet different. The two seemed to come closer and closer to each other but moved further away from the recorder. Then suddenly there was a distant outburst of frantic sounds and then silence. Pittenger went out the next day to search the area that the sounds had come from. He found the remains of two coyotes that appeared to have been smashed against the trees.
